Family Fun in British Columbia
Seattle, April 4, 2005 - What could be more exciting than taking a ferry ride through British Columbia's scenic Gulf Islands, seeing whales in their natural habitat, learning about the Indians on Vancouver Island, visiting a wildlife recovery center, absorbing the amazing colors of world famous Buchart Gardens? Combine it with the contrasting experience of one the most beautiful big cities in North America. See Vancouver's urban features including a tour through its famous neighborhoods and visits to the Granville Island, Stanley Park and Robson Street.
The 8-day escorted tour is offered exclusively for families. Designed in partnership with Pacific Ecoventures, the operator for Elderhostel programs in British Columbia, this tour has something for everyone - from outdoor adventures, cultural and environmental education to guided museum tours, a salmon feast, high tea and free time to explore on your own. The tour is special in its mix of activity, entertainment, fun learning opportunities that are designed to appeal to all generations.
Canadian Contrasts begins in Vancouver, BC and quickly escorts adults and children out to Vancouver Island via a picturesque trip through the Gulf Islands aboard a BC ferry. Families and intergenerational travelers head to Victoria, the provincial capital, enjoying a docent guided tour of the Royal BC museum and nearby parliament buildings.
The next day begins with a whale watching expedition led by conservationists committed to responsible wildlife viewing. The group will learn about the area's marine ecology and be looking out for the area's popular residents of orcas and minke whales, as well as the playfull Dall's porpoises. Upon return to Victoria, families will enjoy high tea at Murchie's and afterward time is free to explore Victoria's many boutique shops, enjoy street performances or just rest.
The next two days are spent learning about the indigenous people of the region. GTC travelers will visit the Kwakwaka'wakw, see their famous totems and Le-La-La Dancers. Activities include helping prepare a salmon feast, a dugout canoe ride and hearing amazing stories wildlife rescues which all contribute to an interactive learning experience that kids prefer today.
Canadian contrasts are evident as the group returns to Vancouver, a culturally cosmopolitan center. After touring the city's neighborhoods such as Gastown, Chinatown, Stanley Park and English Bay, the group will visit Vancouver's famous aquarium in Stanley Park. Travelers of all ages find something fun and worthwhile at Granville Island, considered to be one of the most successful urban redevelopments of its kind.
The last day includes a visit to nearby Lynn Canyon with its fine ecology center and an exhilarating walk across a suspension bridge 240 feet above the canyon below. Before returning for a farewell dinner, GTC travelers will stop in historic Steveson, once one of the busiest fishing ports in the world.
Two tour dates (July 17 and August 6) are available for families with children ages (8 years and above) and are priced from $1,899.00 per person, double occupancy. Children 15 and under receive a $500 discount. The price includes all gratuities, accommodations, most meals, tours, event admissions and guide services as well as a GTC backpack and in depth field guide written specifically for this tour.
